A transformer (trafo) is required when a lamp cannot be connected directly to the mains (220–240V).

In most cases, this concerns lamps that operate on 12 Volts. To power these lamps, the transformer converts the mains voltage from 220–240V to 12V.

This applies to both conventional lighting and LED lighting.
